Release 7.1.0 Software notes

Internet and Intranet

NOTE: For other Netscape Communicator issues, see ``Webtop''.

Running Netscape Communicator or small memory systems
On small memory systems (32MB or less), Netscape Communicator can experience excessive swapping when running Java applications. For example, running a single Java application and Communicator can consume 35MB of memory.

The only workaround is to add more memory to the system.

Running Netscape Communicator as root on the system console
See Running SCOhelp as root on the system console.

Error accessing SCOhelp from Netscape Admin Server
If you try to access SCOhelp as a client from the Netscape Admin Server, the access might fail due to an incorrect entry in the file /usr/ns-home/admserv/httpd-scohelphttp/magnus.conf. Search for the term LOCALHOST:457 (capitalized) and change it to localhost:457 (lower case).

Turning on DNS breaks Netscape server Java execution
Netscape Java execution in the Netscape web server, enabled on the Programs -> Java frame, works without problems when DNS is not enabled on the System Settings -> Performance Tuning frame. The typical test is to enable Java execution on the web server, then test it by running one of the sample Java applets contained in the <ServerRoot>/plugins/java/applets/ directory.

However, when DNS is enabled so that IP addresses are resolved to their full names in the log files and in the ACL directives, Java in the Netscape server fails. Attempting to access one of the applets results in the following page returned by the browser:

   Server Error

This server has encountered an internal error which prevents it from fulfilling your request. The most likely cause is a misconfiguration. Please ask the administrator to look for messages in the server's error log.

The error log contains the following entry:
   [22/Oct/1997:15:55:28] failure: for host h-205-217-236-19.netscape.com
trying to GET /server-java/BrowserDataApplet, java-run reports:
   construction of new ServerApplet failed
Turning off DNS in Netscape resolves the problem again and lets the applets run normally.

Mail/News Preferences window too large for display
The Netscape Mail/News Preferences window is too big for an 800x600 display. This means that the OK, Cancel and Defaults buttons are not visible.

You can access these buttons using the <Tab> key. Move the cursor to the last item on the tab, then press <Tab> once more to move the cursor to just off the screen for OK. Press <Tab> once again for Cancel, and a third time for Defaults. The next <Tab> should bring the cursor back to the top of the tab. To activate any of these buttons, press the Space Bar.

Netscape MUA does not recognize inbox folder location
The Netscape MUA does not recognize the inbox folder location specified for the message store configuration in /etc/default/mail.
